UNIVERSITY
CITY EDUCATION FOUNDATION
8136
Groby Road, University City, MO 63130
Nineteen directors; 3-year terms
The
University City Education Foundation (UCEF)
was
established in 1996 to provide a way to enhance the
University City public schools beyond the limits of normal
tax support. To date the Foundation has focused on raising
private money in order to support the development of
enrichment programs. A self-perpetuating Board of Directors
guides the Foundation and is composed of seventeen private
citizens, plus two individuals who are involved in the
day-to-day operations of the school district. In its first
seven years, the Foundation has distributed over $160,000
to classrooms and schools throughout the school district
and has also established an endowment fund which currently
stands at just over $68,000. Several alumni serve on the
Board and many have been active in planning or
participating in the Foundation's many benefits and
programs.

MUNICIPAL
COMMISSION ON ARTS & LETTERS
6801 Delmar Boulevard, University City, MO 63130
Fifteen members; 4-year terms
One of
University City's fifteen volunteer commissions, the
Municipal Commission on Arts & Letters acts in an
advisory capacity to the City Council in connection with
the artistic, cultural, and scholarly development within
the City. There are 15 members with at least one from each
of the following arts or professions: painting, sculpture,
literature, music, and architecture. The Commission is
currently chaired by Traci Moore, UCHS Class of 1988.
Annual activities include an amateur photography
competition, the University City Sculpture Series, public
lectures and presentations, the Returning
Artist Series, and
free summer concerts in Heman Park. The Commission also
collaborates with other organizations when appropriate.
Through
the Returning
Artist Series, which
began in 1994, alumni of UCHS are invited to return to the
district schools as artists-in-residence, with a free
performance or demonstration for families and the general
public. The goals of this series are to encourage interest
in the arts as careers, to spur the development of artistic
excellence, and to support the arts education curriculum in
the schools. Alumni artists who have donated their time to
this program include Marlon West (Class of '81), Edgar
Davis ('82), Wayne du Maine ('83), Larry Krone ('88),
Melissa Fathman ('83), Laura Scandrett ('84), Gregory
Sporleder ('82), Lisa Nicole Wilkerson ('91), David Levi
('77) and Sam Stang ('77).
